Thank you thank you to all the great vendors, volunteers and shoppers who made Spring Bada-Bing a huge success in 2008. Best year ever! I was shocked and delighted by how many people braved some truly disgusting weather to come to our show and I thank you all. Twelve Questions, Crafty Answers: Penguin Love, Jim Jenkins Designs, The Ripe Radish and Sweet Pepita

Ashli Mccarter: Penguin Love
1. How did you get started with your business?
-- I started making and selling jewelry in 2005. I wasn't very good and it didn't excite me. While surfing the internet I found a tutorial where someone had painted over pages in old books so they could draw in it. I am way to impatient to do that, so I thought to myself "can I make new insides?" So I looked up book binding and taught myself Coptic stitch. I started making journals from vintage books and then I was left with all these insides so I started making everything else to use every part of the book.
2. What is your favorite tool to work with?
--My "guillotine" paper cutter. I love cutting and folding paper, I'm odd.
3. What/who inspires you?
--It's cheesy but my husband inspires and supports me, he's my penguin. I'm very also inspired by vintage books. I just love 1950's books; they have the best covers and illustrations.

4. Man-bag or murse?
--Definitely a murse.
5. Where do you see your business in 3 yrs?
-- One day I'd love to be able to craft full or part time. But till then, I hope to be in more boutiques and stores. I'd also love to do more craft fairs.
6. If you only had one thing to tell someone starting a craft/indie business what would it be?
-- Find something you love to do! If you don't love if, even if it sells wells you won't be as happy.
7. Rock, paper or scissors?
--Paper of course. You should see some of my paper cut scars, paper is dangerous.
8. Are you a full time crafter/designer?
--Not yet, but maybe one day.
9. Do you have a craft crush? (A designer or indie/craft business that you admire.)
--I have a craft crush on BoyGirlParty.Etsy.com Her illustrations and products are awesome!
10. What is your favorite current indie/DIY trend?
--I've been seeing a lot of hedgehogs, owls, gnomes and squids. I love all 4 and have forever so in a way it's nice to see them becoming popular.
11. What was the best compliment a customer ever gave you?
-- A customer once told me that she smiles every time she sees the journals I've made for her.
She also told me she was in love with me, well with me and my shop. Everyone loves to be loved.
12. What craft would you like to try or learn?
--I would love to learn to knit. I've tried before and I'm just so uncoordinated. I will try again soon, I'm determined!

---

Jim Jenkins: Jim Jenkins Designs
1. How did you get started with you business? I was building custom furniture, and decided one day to try my hand at making a jewelry box. It turned out so well, that I haven't stopped!
2. What is your favorite tool to work with?
-- It has to be the band saw. It's the basis for making my boxes, and when I start using it, I finally start to see the box coming to life.
3. What/who inspires you?
--Many things will inspire me. Sometimes it's the grain pattern of the wood, sometimes it's something that I can't even put my finger on. I love water, either on it, in it, or under it (I'm a diver), and many people say that they see water in my designs. Maybe it's a subconscious thing.
4. Man-bag or murse?
--Neither. Give me a pair of pants with deep pockets any day. Of course my chiropractor keeps telling me to loose the stuff in my back pockets!
5. Where do you see your business in 3 years?
--I'd love to have an assistant to take over some of the more mundane aspects of creating my boxes. I'd still have complete control over the artistic side, but the sanding I would be more than happy to turn over to someone else!
6. If you only had one thing to tell someone starting a craft/indie business what would it be?
--Start slow, and plan ahead. Don't expect everything to take off after a month, and take your time to perfect your product. It will all come together eventually.
7. Rock, paper, or scissors? Rock
8. Are you a full time crafter/designer?
-- Yes, but with other sidelines, too. I build custom furniture and other items, and I also am a freelance scenic designer.
9. Do you have a craft crush?
-- Not one in particular, no.
10. What is you favorite current indie/DIY trend?
-- Going green. My current goal, is to not have to pay Dominion Power one penny for the electricity to run my computer or my fridge. I think that if more people realized that by going green you'd save more money, the more people you'd have jumping on the bandwagon. As the saying goes, money talks.
11. What was the best compliment a customer ever gave you?
-- It had to be the very first customer when the bought the first box. That told me that someone other than myself thought that the box was something more than a fancy piece of firewood!
12. What craft would you like to try or learn?
--Working with glass. Stained glass appeals to be quite a bit, as well as blown glass. I'd need to build a second shop to work with those, though!

---

Ashley Henley: The Ripe Radish
1. How did you get started with your business?
--I honestly cannot remember how I heard about www.etsy.com two years ago, but I heard about it somewhere and just loved the idea of a website where you could buy handmade goodies directly from the artists. It started very, very slowly, where I would sell something every couple of weeks and it was always an event when something sold. Now I'm selling a few items a week. The growth has been slow and steady.
2. What is your favorite tool to work with?
--It's not really a tool per se, but I love working with vintage fabrics and buttons. There's a certain nostalgia about vintage materials. Things just aren't made the same way anymore.
3. What/who inspires you?
--Colors, my super-creative husband, my dogs and their endless love, childhood, other amazing crafters and artists, and successful small business owners.
4. Man-bag or murse?
--My husband has a man-bag that I make fun of quite frequently. I think I'll start calling it a murse from now on.
5. Where do you see your business in 3 yrs?
--Aside from trying my hand at wholesale and hopefully making some more money, I hope it stays exactly the same!
6. If you only had one thing to tell someone starting a craft/indie business what would it be?
--My biggest advice would be to find your own niche. The craft/indie business world is growing rapidly, and there are certain markets (like jewelry, for instance) that are very over-saturated, which means you have to work even harder to stand out. It's a little more challenging, but comforting in the end to know that you have something that others don't--something to set yourself apart from the rest.
7. Rock, paper or scissors?
--Rotary cutter!
8. Are you a full time crafter/designer?
--Nope, but I would love to be! I spend a third of my time working on my crafts, a third in graduate school, and another third as a full-time technical writer. The Ripe Radish is like my alter-ego, my outlet of outlets.
9. Do you have a craft crush? (A designer or indie/craft business that you admire.)
--I have so many craft crushes! There are the obvious choices: Debbie Stoller of Stitch 'N Bitch fame; Jenny Hart of the Sublime Stitching line; and Leah Kramer, founder of www.craftster.org. Apart from those inspiring ladies, it seems I have a different Etsy crush each week.
10. What is your favorite current indie/DIY trend?
--My favorite current indie/DIY trend would have to be the recent surge in using recycled materials. I love seeing how creative people can be when it comes to repurposing. Like, who would have thought you could take a bunch of plastic bags, fuse them, then sew them together to make a tote bag?
11. What was the best compliment a customer ever gave you?
--A customer who ordered one of my button bouquets told me that it sits on her desk and brightens her day every day. It makes me so happy to know that something I made could have such a lovely effect on someone!
12. What craft would you like to try or learn?
--I would love to learn needle felting! It looks like so much fun, all that poking and prodding. And the end results always look awesome.
---

Shannon Kline:
Sweet Pepita
1. How did you get started with your business?
--I had old t-shirts that I knew I was never going to wear again, but couldn’t bring myself to get rid of, so I began combining them with organic cotton and sewing them into clothes for Pepita.

2. What is your favorite tool to work with?
-- Freshly sharpened scissors

3. What/who inspires you?
-- Living green is something that’s really important to my family. Conventionally grown cotton is one of the most chemically dependent crops in the world putting tons of herbicides, insecticides and more straight into our environment and our homes. Using only organically grown cotton and recycled fabric in our children's clothing supports a lifestyle we believe in.
And Pepita inspires me every day, of course!
4. Man-bag or murse?
--Man bag. Definitely man bag.

5. Where do you see your business in 3 yrs?
-- In 3 years, my daughter will be in school, so I’ll be able to sew full time. I’d like to see Sweet Pepita available in shops across the country.

6. If you only had one thing to tell someone starting a craft/indie business what would it be?
--Network. Connect with other crafters.

7. Rock, paper or scissors? Scissors!
8. Are you a full time crafter/designer?
--I’m a part time jeweler and a part time seamstress, so together, I guess I am a full time crafter!

9. Do you have a craft crush? (A designer or indie/craft business that you admire.)
--Yes! I love Cotton Monsters. My husband and I are so excited. We think this is the year that Pepita will be able to pick out and buy her very own monster!

10. What is your favorite current indie/DIY trend?
--Eco-friendly design

11. What was the best compliment a customer ever gave you?
--It was something like…. “You made my boyfriend’s day. He’s been going around and saying, ‘Look! My son’s first Dead Kennedys t-shirt!’”

12. What craft would you like to try or learn? Printmaking

Twelve Questions, Crafty Answers: Disquieting Designs, A.Bel Studio, Weehah!

Spring Bada-Bing! was the happening today. Of course, you knew that already... you were there too, hanging out with (and buying from) some of the coolest indie artists and designers in the country. Ever wonder how your favorite artist got started or what inspires them? We do too! So we asked our vendors 12 questions to get a sneak peek into a crafters world.
---
Megan Brame: Disquieting Designs
1. How did you get started with your business?
--I knew people that had some pretty serious allergies and decided to try my hand at making some crafty lip balms...it took on a life of its own pretty quickly after that
2. What is your favorite tool to work with?
--shea butter is my reason for living
3. What/who inspires you?
--Other crafters, there are some people out there doing really rocking things and keeping true to themselves. As cheesy as that sounds it's really a great way to keep inspiration going.
4. Man-bag or murse?
--Murse. who doesn't love a mishmash of words?
5. Where do you see your business in 3 yrs?
--Living off of it without a *really real* job, supporting myself, the Mr., and our beloved cat, Bettie.
6. If you only had one thing to tell someone starting a craft/indie business what would it be?
--You know, I saw this sign at a bar once that said "never ever ever give up." and I try to pass that on to everyone I can. It gets hard, and sometimes you wonder what the pay-off will be...but you'll never know unless you keep at it! Never ever ever give up.
7. Rock, paper or scissors?
--Dude. scissors.
8. Are you a full time crafter/designer?
--85/15
9. Do you have a craft crush? (A designer or indie/craft business that you admire.)
---See that chick with the squids? She rocks my world.
10. What is your favorite current indie/DIY trend?
--I really love the whole movement. I think it's so crazy that it's a way of life.
11. What was the best compliment a customer ever gave you?
--I had a girl pull her mom over to my table and say "Smell this, you'll die." I told her that would be my new slogan.
12. What craft would you like to try or learn?
--I'd like to get back in to knitting. I tried, but I never made anything. Any day now!
---
Amanda Krueger: A. Bel Studio
1. How did you get started with your business.
--I saw other people doing it, and I thought, "Hey, me too!" I know everyone seems to hate that phrase, it has such a stigma about it. But I really think it's fantastic, and sums up the whole DIY movement in a lovely and honest way.
2. What is your favorite tool to work with?
--Probably mod podge. Wait, maybe a seam ripper. No, definitely mod podge.
3. What/who inspires you?
--Vintage books and trips to the thrift store.
4. Man-bag or murse?
--My sister wears a fanny-pack (if that helps.)
5. Where do you see your business in 3 yrs?
--Making money (I hope) so I can continue doing it.
6. If you only had one thing to tell someone starting a craft/indie business what would it be?
--Get thicker skin. That's pretty much the best advice of all time, for every part of life. Artist-types (myself included) are already so damn sensitive. Get over it. Toughen up. Keep going.
7. Rock, paper or scissors?
--No thanks, I'm full.
8. Are you a full time crafter/designer?
--Yep.
9. Do you have a craft crush? (A designer or indie/craft business that you admire.)
--I have remained pretty loyal fans of the few etsy/bloggers I met in the very beginning. we all started at about the same time, and it's so inspiring to watch each other expand and flourish.
10. What is your favorite current indie/DIY trend?
--I'm loving the vintage doilies that are popping up all over the place, but I don't really get the matryoshka doll-craze. Sorry, not a fan.
11. What was the best compliment a customer ever gave you?
--"Wow, you started this business all by yourself and you never even finished college!?" (Ok, I made that up... but I would consider it a great compliment.)
12. What craft would you like to try or learn?
--Book binding looks terribly fun, and I've always thought real soap making would be interesting, too.
---
Louisa Wimberger: Weehah!
1. How did you get started with your business?
--It started as a hobby while I was a high school English teacher, and it just grew and grew! I left teaching several years ago to give weehah my (almost!) full attention.
2. What is your favorite tool to work with?
--Colorful cardstock. When I see new swatch books released from certain companies, I squeal.
3. What/who inspires you?
--So many things. Certain color combinations, pithy responses from friends, and, of course, a hankerin' for the handwritten word.
4. Man-bag or murse?
--Murse. : )
5. Where do you see your business in 3 yrs?
--In a studio outside my home with hardwood floors, lots of light and surface space, on the lovely pedestrian mall in Charlottesville, in even more boutiques and shops than I am now.
6. If you only had one thing to tell someone starting a craft/indie business what would it be?
--Love what you do. Base your designs on what YOU love, not primarily what others will love. Make it be from who you truly are and "they" will come!
7. Rock, paper or scissors?
--Paper, of course, I'm a greeting card designer. : )
8. Are you a full time crafter/designer?
--Yes, but I do fundraising for a tiny school, too, just a few hours a week. I started out as an educator and it's hard to totally leave the academic community!
9. Do you have a craft crush? (A designer or indie/craft business that you admire.)
--I do but, as always, I must keep my crushes to myself for now.
10. What is your favorite current indie/DIY trend?
--Simply that it's growing so much! Shows like Bada Bing, sites like Etsy . . . makes me very happy.
11. What was the best compliment a customer ever gave you?
--Someone recently told me she wanted to EAT my cards.
12. What craft would you like to try or learn?
--Oh, so many . . . and so little time. I'd love to make cool pendants, learn pottery or ceramics, and work a letterpress machine.

Spring Bada-Bing

The Richmond Craft Mafia's Spring Bada-Bing was awesome despite the wet weather outside. I think this year's show was the best ever.

A big thanks goes out to the crafters & artists, sponsors, volunteers, customers, the shop owners & buyers who came out for the wholesale preview hour and to Plant Zero for being such an awesome venue for the show.

I hope everyone else had as nice of a time as I did.

Here's a few pictures (see more on the SBB Flickr Group I just set up and be sure to add your own if you have any!)

Spring Bada-Bing Vendors that make me Smile!

Right now, all across Richmond, the ladies of the Richmond Craft Mafia are putting the finishing touches on their displays and wrapping up their SBB committee work (We stayed up until 10:30 last night stuffing Swag Bags and now I just finished making lunch labels and printing out load-in maps, fun! We also get to be up at the crack o' dawn tomorrow to get the venue ready!)

So, in this stressful time right before our big show, I want to share the vendors in tomorrow's show that really make me smile and realize that all this hard work is SO totally worth it!

Yes, happy cute amazing vendors, when I wake up at 5:30am on Sunday, I will think of you guys as I look at the clock & try not to cry.

A. Bel Studio and her sweet little fuzzy sweater creatures! How can you not smile?

Bowerbox press has some really fun and delightfully silly prints (I own one!).

I have a serious felt addiction and I plan on feeding my habit by purchasing a delightful, bright and very cheery felt brooch from The Littlest Bean.

Oooh, I make mindless baby-talk squealy sounds every time I look at a picture of oelle m's hamster nuggets!

And I am so unbelievably pleased to welcome skullknockers to Richmond! Because everyone needs a naugahyde monkey.

crafty baby!

Our own Nicole Sarvey is so crafty she made this...

Welcome to our newest crafty baby, Thea. We can't wait to see you and your sweet bumble soon!

Kid and baby stuff! Just oodles of it!

So, the Germans have a word for everything. Like farfegnugen. And schadenfreude. And other various things that sound like you have something stuck in your larynx. I think if there was a German word for "more stuff for babies and kids than you can shake a stick at" it would sound something like Spring Bada-Bing. For real. Check it out:

<--April Scott: bright and fun dresses, sizes newborn - 3T.

Boogie Babee: adorable bibs and (my favorite) plush owls! -->

<--Ah, we meet again, Cleo Dee: Did I happen to mention she also does squid onesies? ;)

Shannon by Hand: onesies, bib sets and other cute baby accessories. -->

<-- Check out Sweet Pepita for unique upcycled children's clothes, made from vintage and recycled fabric and tees! It's green and hip!

And don't forget our very own Monkey and Me, who has just the cutest clothes for your little monkey. She's the mommy of a 4 year old, so she makes clothes that are not only cute but also can survive being worn by active tots! -->

<--And last, but not least, because she is the ultimate sewing goddess and rock-star mommy, Modern June, who has a line of "Mommy and Me" aprons as well as bibs, art smocks and the ever-indispensable "splat mat"!

Shameless Squid Crush

OK, OK. I know Kelly already sorta talked about how cool Cleo Dee is, but she is my official Craft Crush (well, her and My Paper Crane, but I digress) so I am damn well gonna talk about her some more!

Really, what actually inspired this post was looking at her blog and seeing this:

I mean, look at it. Dang, she is cool! Now, I am the resident graphic design mafiosa around here, but even I will give a bow and a tip of the hat to bad-ass design like that.

Now I am off to go stuff Swag Bags (wouldn't you like to know what's in them?...then you better show up on Sunday at 11am on the nose to get one!), but I will leave you with my spirit animal, the Viking Squid!

Let's talk about dudes.

As we all know, craft shows can often be a frightening and girly place, full of fabulous handbags, must-have jewelry and the cutest baby stuff ever (next post: OMG baby stuff, for reals!).

So, since Adrien already highlighted several of our fine vendors who happen to be dudes, now let's talk some more about stuff for the menfolk.

Because you can never have too many pirate or robot-themed shirts, check out Spaghetti Kiss for totally dude-worthy tees and hoodies.

Speaking of robots (and rockets and spaceships and monkeys and I could go on and on), have a look at the fine men's tees at Pop Idiot.

Have an artsy man? Or a man with nothing on his walls? Perchance you will find the photography of (gasp, another dude vendor!) CRV images a perfect fit.

What about that nerdy guy in your life? Check out these recycled disk notebooks from Brightwood Press. (Does anybody remember the big floppy disks from back in the day? No? Just me? I am so old....)

We love you too, Arthur.

I have a lot of craft-crushes. Arthur Hash? Is one of them which is why it's so awesome he's a vendor this year at Spring Bada-Bing. I met him at Bizarre Market and walked away with a tiny skull pin and some great stickers, one of which landed on my mountain bike:

That is so sweet, right? I thought so too. Arthur sort of transcends craft and goes right for the art-craft jugular in a way that makes me wish I was cool enough to have thought of it myself. When I was at VCU in the Craft Department there was always a guy like him who wasn't satisfied with just making cool jewelry, he had to make cool jewelry that you could punch out of a flat sheet of plexiglass and assemble. He had to make brooches with bits of used sneaker tread. Arthur totally pushes the limit of personal decoration and if that's not crush-worthy, I don't know what is, man.

shopping wish list

Here is my shopping wish list for this weeks Spring Bada Bing! Scary thing is this is just part of my list. You can find me shopping on Sunday instead of in my booth!

I need a book from Betz White, the super star crafter! And I need pincushion because I know I won't be making one of my own anytime soon.

I would also love to replace my cheap Crate and Barrel coaters for some of By Cary coasters. I am in love with her Spring Silhouette Greeting Cards too!

I will take just about any thing from Red Prairie Press! This Folkprint tee would be good for starters! I still regret not buying one of her scarves at the DC mafia show in December.

My son will surly need a Ninja from Needle Noodles to go with his brain slugs from last years SBB!

And if my daughter doesn't need this cute cupcake Squid, I'll take it! OH we love our Cleo Dee Collection. The easter bunny shops there, who knew?

Everyone needs a gnome from A. Bel Studio, ok I need four! I have been waiting way to patiently for these little guys!

The best thing I can think of buying is this... I were a wealthy crafter I would buy each of my 14 RCM DIVA GIRLS some bitchin Bath products from Disquieting Design. Why? Cuz they rock and they have worked so hard to put on our 3rd Spring Bada Bing. I am so enjoying tub shooter Sunday night, my poison, Black Cherry Vanilla.

Come see these super star crafters and more on Sunday 11-4. Here are the directions!
